Super Smash Bros. Director: ‘Change of Direction Needed’

Love it or hate it, Super Smash Bros. has left its mark on the gaming world, even inspiring a PlayStation game in a remarkably similar style. It has been hailed for reinventing the fighting game genre and panned for not being a true fighting game. If you haven’t heard by now another game in the series is in development for Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS, well, you have now.

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has been hard at work on this title, even bringing in Namco Bandai for assistance. The big question, of course, is what Nintendo will do to progress the series (as is always expected of sequels). In response to a Nintendo Power interview, Sakurai had this to say:

It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’…In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.

Does this mean Sakurai plans on sticking with the established cast? Probably not, but we now know he is looking at other things than simply bringing new characters to the table. Sounds intriguing from over here, but what do you think? As always, let your voice be heard in the comments!
