Atari Inc. has filed for chapter 11 restructuring bankruptcy today, separating itself from Atari SA, which is its French parent company. Atari Inc. plans to sell all assets in the next 90 to 120 days. Assets include early franchises such as Pong and Asteroids and even the iconic logo. Atari has a 40 year history in video gaming, most closely related to the years of arcade.
Atari has been through numerous acquisitions, from GT interactive in 1993 then to Infogrames Entertainment when the French company acquired the company in 2001. Infogrames renamed itself Atari SA and since then the two have been separate entities. The history of Atari is rich and varied, though later attempts as a game publisher have led to the restructuring that the company seeks today.
