A new preview for Level 5’s upcoming PS4 and PC exclusive JRPG, Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom, has revealed the fate of familiars in this entry in the series.

According to IGN, familiars won’t be in Revenant Kingdom. Instead, you’ll battle using one of the three party members – Evan, Roland, or Tani – in real-time, similar to what you would find from something like Tales of Berseria or Final Fantasy XV, to an extent.

The familiars aren’t without a replacement, though. New to the series are little creatures called Higgledies. Level 5 CEO Akihiro┬áHino says that Higgledies were introduced to “refresh the battle system” of Ni No Kuni. By pressing L1 on the DualShock 4, you can send Higgledies to attack an enemy in a dungeon. Higgledies can even distract bosses, affording you the time needed to heal or launch a few more attacks.

You can equip four Higgledies, each with an elemental endowment, at one time. Like most games with elemental systems, certain Higgledies will be more effective against certain enemy types.

Similar to Oliver’s spells from the original Ni No Kuni, Higgledies can be used outside of combat to access new areas. One example provided in IGN’s preview is using a green Higgledie to cast a wind spell, activating a bouncepad to jump to a new area.

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom will be out later this year for PS4 and PC. The game runs at a 60 fps on a regular PS4.
