6 Pokemon Go myths BUSTED!

5 problems with Pokemon GO

NeoGAF (right)

If you’re in the city, then going to the park and hunting Pokémon, leisurely stopping by Pokéstops and nabbing materials along the way doesn’t seem like such a daunting task. If you’re in a rural area, say the countryside, you’re probably not having as much fun. I live in the country and as I watch people on forums collecting things as they sit in their offices or finding random ‘mons in their homes, I sit and stare at my game with disdain. Not only are Pokémon hard to come by in rural areas, but there isn’t much variety. More often than not, I’m swamped with Eevees, Rattatas, and Pidgeys. I could probably open an Eevee gym, you know, if there were more than two in my area. Pokéstops are far and few between as well. The closest I can get to a worthwhile Pokémon GO experience is by driving an hour away to my nearest large city.

2. Lack of built-in social features

Via: James Croft / Twitter
Via: Twitter

And that brings us to the game’s next problem: it’s not very social. Sure, if you’re in the city, you’ve likely run across swathes of people playing Pokémon GO, making it possibly the most social game you’ve ever played. Me, though? Not so much. Because there aren’t many Pokémon around, finding other Pokémon GO players is just as difficult. There isn’t really a reason for all of us to go outside and run around the town since there isn’t anything here. Without Pokéstops or a decent variety of Pokémon, Pokémon GO might as well be dead here.

3. Doesn’t run in the background

Pokemon GO plus

What’s one of the most basic application features we take for granted these days? Running in the background! What’s something Pokémon GO doesn’t do without an additional accessory? Running in the background! Possibly the most frustrating part of this is that doing anything with Pokémon GO requires you to have the application up and running at all times. Things like hatching eggs or even discovering Pokemon cannot be done without keeping the app open and your eyes trained on that moderately-sized screen, unless you have the Pokémon GO Plus accessory. In that case, you can still find Pokémon and catch ones you’ve already caught. We shouldn’t have to pay extra for such a basic feature.

4. Doesn’t explain much

Pokemon GO nearby

What are the exact distances of the steps? How long is a kilometer for those who live in the US? Does the circle around your character mean one step? These are all questions I’ve seen people ask on forums or asked myself since Pokémon GO‘s launch. None of these features are explained in the game. Very little is explained, in fact. Just knowing how the “nearby” indicator works would go so far in helping the Pokémon GO community locate Pokémon. I’ve seen numerous fan theories about how the indicator works, but so far, none of them are correct and Niantic Labs isn’t giving us an explanation.

5. Buggy

pokemon gym

While Niantic Labs might have fixed the Pokémon Trainer Club’s login bug earlier this week, and solved most of the server issues, the game still has a few remaining bugs. The most annoying bug I’ve come across happens at the gym. When trying to capture a gym, the very last Pokémon at that rival team’s location gets down to 1hp and….nothing. They stop taking damage at that point, meanwhile, my Pokémon are fainting left and right. At this point, I’m giving up on gyms until this is fixed. Additionally, I’ve seen others whose app freezes as they’re capturing a Pokémon or just sitting idly.

asked players not to play the game and is currently in the process of getting itself removed from the game so players won’t be tempted to pull out their phones.

7. Robbers are using Pokemon Go to target potential victims.

Since the game’s release, there have been numerous reports of robbers using the game to rob unsuspecting Pokemon Go players. The most recent happened in Austin after a man playing the game was robbed at gunpoint while sitting at a bus stop. Two teens in St. Louis were robbed while they were hunting pokemon, too. Just goes to show that you can’t be too safe out there and maybe you shouldn’t wander into any neighborhoods you’re not familiar with, no matter how tempting that PokeStop is.

6. Watch one woman walk through a live weather broadcast as she tries to catch Pokemon!

This happened in Florida. Enough said.

5. Even physical injury hasn’t stopped some players from playing Pokemon Go.

A 22 year-old man refused medical treatment after being stabbed while playing Pokemon Go. The man says he assumed his attacker was playing the game too. Turns out the man just wanted to stab him.

“I saw him go by and asked if he was playing Pokemon GO. He was like ‘what?’ I guess he wanted to battle because he came up at me with a knife.”

The man has since gotten treatment for the stab wound, which required eight stitches. Ouch. Maybe next time don’t assume everyone is playing Pokemon Go?

4. Sydney apartment residents pelt 300 Pokemon Go players with water balloons.

A group of angry apartment dwellers in Sydney, Australia has retaliated against the Pokemon Go players who show up at their apartment building at all hours of the night. Apparently the residents weren’t too happy about the status of their building as a PokeStop, as they put together quite a few water balloons and pelted more than 300 players in an attempt to deter them from catching ’em all.

3. A girl attempting to catch water pokemon by the Wind River found a dead body.

Shayla Wiggens was exploring along the Wind River in Wyoming when she stumbled across something that wasn’t quite the dratini she had hoped to find. The body of 28 year-old Jeffrey Day was floating in the river just a few feet from a bridge. Police aren’t sure what happened to Day as the autopsy hasn’t been performed yet, but his death is being considered accidental.

2. Animal shelters are hoping kind-hearted Pokemon Go players won’t mind taking their dogs for a walk, too.

pokemon-dog

An animal shelter in Muncie, Indiana is hoping to capitalize on the Pokemon Go craze by asking players who are hunting down Pokemon to take their dogs with them on their adventures. The staff director says he got the idea after watching droves of people all over the city wandering around trying to catch ’em all.

1. Two Marine veterans playing Pokemon Go unwittingly helped catch a man wanted for attempted murder.

Turns out playing Pokemon Go can apparently help you catch wanted people, too! Two Marine veterans were playing the game in Fullerton, California in order to catch Pokemon. The duo says they were waiting on the game to unfreeze when they noticed a suspicious man carrying a fake plastic rose and approaching children. After the man touched the child, the two Marines stepped in. Some advice from one of those Marines? Pay attention.

“If I hadn’t looked over to my left and seen this guy who looks out of place, I could have missed it. The best thing I can say: Remind yourself that you are not in the phone playing the game. Look around and be more aware.”

PlayStation 4 is less than one week away. The editors of PS4Daily, XboxOneDaily, and WiiUDaily talk about the upcoming launch. They also find time to talk about what’s wrong with Nintendo’s marketing strategy and why Capcom is likely releasing the Xbox One exclusive Dead Rising 3 with 720p resolution and 30 fps instead of 1080p/60fps.
